Los Angeles Harbor College takes pride in being a leader among community colleges in educational applications of modern technology. The school works very actively to keep up with the pace of modern technology offering students the latest in techniques and programs in order to prepare them as well as possible for the rapidly changing workplace environment. Harbor College also works very actively to create strong relationships with local business, civic organizations and the community to maximize the quality and scope of its educational programs.

For over 55 years, Los Angeles Harbor College has been the college of choice for Harbor-area residents seeking educational excellence with a personal touch. From its beginning in September of 1949 when the first students passed through the doors, Los Angeles Harbor College has grown from a technically oriented college into a comprehensive institution of higher learning with a broad spectrum of transfer, vocational, and community services programs.

Today, the nearly 8,000 students that enroll each semester in credit courses reflect the diverse ethnic composition of the communities served by the college. One of nine two-year public community colleges comprising the Los Angeles Community College District, Harbor College prides itself on being the college of choice for the nearly 400,000 residents of Carson, Harbor City, Gardena, Lomita, San Pedro, Wilmington, and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The educational objectives of the college are complemented by the services offered to students which include orientation and placement testing, individual counseling, academic advisement, handicapped student support services, career counseling, tutoring, student government, student activities and clubs. Included in our extracurricular programs are a jazz band, choral groups, theater productions, intercollegiate sports in soccer, basketball, golf, tennis and baseball, a radio station and many special-interest clubs.

Academics

Los Angeles Harbor College is one of the few community colleges participating in the Transfer Alliance Program in which high-achieving students can earn priority admission to USC, UCLA, and other four-year institutions. It also offers special travel-study programs in locations such as Hong Kong, Australia, Spain, and Mexico allowing students to expand their educational horizons internationally.”

Los Angeles Harbor College offers a full range of programs preparing students to transfer to four-year universities and offers several Associates degrees in a variety of Arts and Sciences concentrations such as Business, engineering, and culinary arts. International students with sufficient languages skills can take academic and elective courses parallel to their English language courses.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Los Angeles Harbor College does require a TOEFL or IELTS for admission. In rare occasions, an exception may be made. Upon arrival students will take an ESL assessment exam to better gauge their English level. The school does offer a small selection of ESL classes which focus on integrated skills of reading and writing, listening and speaking. The higher level of English classes concentrates on College level to expand their ability to express their critical thinking but verbally and written.

Transfer Center

Los Angeles Harbor College has transfer agreements with UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara College of Letters and Sciences, UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering, UC Santa Cruz, CSU East Bay, CSU Northridge, and CSU Dominguez Hills. Transfer agreements allow eligible students to study at a Los Angeles Harbor College and have a guarantee of admission as a junior-level transfer.

Several representatives from a variety of public and private universities come to Los Angeles Harbor College’s campus to meet with potential applicants; these schools include Arizona State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and UCLA. In addition to campus visits, the Transfer Center coordinates field trips to universities in the area such as Loyola Marymount University and UCLA. The students gain valuable information on housing, financial aid, and speak with admissions counselors from various departments to learn of transfer requirements.

The Transfer Center guides each student through the course selection process to make sure they are taking the appropriate classes for university transfer as well as explains and supports the application process to a four year university.

Los Angeles Harbor College sponsors women’s teams in soccer, softball and volleyball, and men’s teams in baseball, basketball, football and soccer.

Campus /Location

Los Angeles Harbor College, which is located twenty miles south of downtown Los Angeles next to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Wilmington, is situated on an eighty acre campus and is adjacent to an attractive public park and public golf course. The campus is only minutes away from the Pacific Ocean. Facilities include a Bookstore, Career Guidance Center, Child Care Center, Learning Resources Center with a Library and Media Center included, and an on-campus golf driving range. In addition there are several new buildings such as the $22.3 million Northeast Academic Hall which provides 65,563 square feet of general classroom space and faculty offices to the College. And the $15.9 million Student Services and Administration Building provides students with 38,746 square feet of administrative and student-related services, including admissions, records and transcripts. The campus of Los Angeles Harbor College is one of the safest campuses in the Los Angeles - South Bay area.

With great diversity in population with people hailing from all over the world more than 220 languages are spoken in this truly international city. The city is spread out over a large area with a number of different areas that all have their own feeling and atmosphere. People who visit this great city have very different experiences depending on if they have spent their time in Hollywood or Venice Beach.
