Los Angeles Mission College

Sylmar, California

Founded in 1975, Los Angeles Mission College is the newest of the nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. Its 22-acre campus, located in the northeast San Fernando Valley, is among the most scenic in the state. It has an enrollment of about 7,000 students. Small class sizes allow for close contact with instructors. Excellent academic programs, a focus on university transfer, and workforce training are the hallmarks of education at Los Angeles Mission College.

Los Angeles Mission provides new state-of-the-art technology, innovative programs and a competent faculty to bring to the student the most modern learning tools available. Los Angeles Mission College offers students one of the broadest areas of academic exposure in one of the most pleasant environments in which to pursue an academic career.

Academics

Los Angeles Mission College will ensure that students master academic and workplace knowledge and skills by providing comprehensive lower-division general education, AA and AS degree programs, occupational education, occupational certificates, transfer education, developmental education, counseling and guidance, and community services which will meet the needs of people in the San Fernando Valley while protecting academic freedom and maintaining academic standards.

English as Second Language (ESL)

Los Angeles Harbor College prefers that students submit TOEFL scores. In such circumstances when the TOEFL is be waived, an assessment is required upon arrival for either the ESL program or the regular academic program. If a student scores upwards of level 5 in ESL I, students may be able to allow parallel coursework.

The ESL program offers intensive English instruction that ranges from beginning language skills to advanced level composition courses. Students in the program improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a friendly classroom atmosphere with a caring and enthusiastic faculty.

Transfer Center

Many students at Los Angeles Mission College choose to take advantage of the university transfer center where students have Computers to access university or major prep information, complete their transfer application and write your personal statement, receive transfer counseling, meet with university/college representative or speak to a peer mentor, as well as attend transfer and career related workshops. Representatives from UCLA, Loyola Marymount, and several other local universities are often on campus as well as the office organizes field trips to the university campuses so student can see everything first hand.

LAMC follows the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum which allows students to take the course load of first two years of a bachelor degree at a community college. The Transfer office and International student advisor assist students in selecting the required courses for their intended degree. Students have gone on to the following universities to complete their bachelor’s degree.

Students are encouraged to apply early for guaranteed admission at many of the UC campuses through the TAG (Transfer Agreement Guarantee), which “is a formal, written agreement that outlines the courses you must complete before transferring, states the grade point average you must earn and lists specific requirements for selective majors.

Student Life

International students receive excellent support from the international student office. Not only are they there to help the students but also organize specialized workshops for International Students on immigration, employment, academics, and extra-curricular activities. There is also an International Student Club where new students can make new friends, discuss academics, or just to have fun!

Mission College fields competitive teams in men’s baseball, women’s softball, and men’s and women’s soccer. Our athletes know that academic achievement comes first...and that accomplishments on the field go hand-in-hand with success in the classroom. Mission College is a proud member the Western State Conference, one of the most competitive athletic alliances in the state. All new students are encouraged to join the many men and women who proudly represent Mission College in competitive sports. There are also cultural activities; volunteer programs, participation in community related affairs, athletics, and student government.

Many students wander off campus and enjoy hanging out with many of the famous sights of Los Angeles as well as the quaint neighborhood coffee shops that only locals know about.

Campus /Location

LAMC is located in Sylmar and has strong, historical ties to our neighboring communities of San Fernando, Pacoima, Mission Hills, North Hills, Panorama City and Granada Hills. The scenic campus is minutes away from major attractions in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the United States and its metropolitan area is home to nearly 12.9 million people who hail from all over the globe and speak 224 different languages. L.A. is one of the world's most prominent centers of culture, technology, media, business, and international trade. Los Angeles also leads the world in producing popular entertainment — such as motion picture, television, video games and recorded music — which forms the base of its international fame and global status. Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice Beach and “Posh and Becks”: One of the most famous cities in the world, Los Angeles truly has a lot to offer to international students. The city is spread out over a large area with a number of different areas that all have their own feeling and atmosphere. People who visit this great city have very different experiences depending on if they have spent their time in Hollywood or Venice Beach.
