North Country School
Lake Placid, New York
Founded in 1938, NCS offers a traditional curriculum for boarding and day children in grades 4-9. The students come from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and countries— and they are known well by the dedicated, multi-talented adults who teach, live with, and care for them. NCS’s unique programming—extensive offerings in studio and performing arts, daily work jobs, family-style residential houses, and outdoor activities from horseback riding to ice climbing—provides a variety of venues through which every child can find success. NCS offers a literal and metaphorical breath of fresh mountain air. This is a stunningly beautiful place, in an environment of four-season outdoor activity. By placing emphasis on human ingenuity, the school encourages creativity over consumerism.
Dormitories and School Residences
North Country School has no traditional dormitories. Instead, groups of no more than 12 children live in houses under the supervision of caring faculty house parents, some of who have families of their own. Students live with a roommate or two in one of several on-campus houses.
