Academics

Scottsdale Community College is a great place to begin your college experience, SCC has hundreds of courses and programs designed to help you earn an associate degree, or provide a strong foundation for university transfer. Academic excellence is taken seriously at SCC. The college is accredited by the North Central Association / Higher Learning Commission, by meeting and upholding a set of nationally established criteria for quality, integrity, innovation, diversity, inclusiveness, service, collaboration, and learning.

Faculty at SCC is focused on teaching and learning. The average ratio of faculty to students in the classroom is 1:20. The faculty at SCC is highly qualified, and must meet academic achievement levels in their field as well as experience standards. While some 23% of SCC's faculty has earned doctoral degrees, 71% of faculties in academic areas have earned a masters degree and all occupational faculty must meet strict educational and professional experience standards.

In addition to traditional programs of study, including university transfer and career/technical classes, SCC offers community education, continuing education for practicing professionals, developmental education, and English as a second language. SCC's Business Institute, located in North Scottsdale, serves as a resource to local businesses seeking customized training and individuals seeking streamlined business courses.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

SCC also offers a full-time English as a Second Language (ESL) program which prepares students for success in regular academic degree programs. Free tutoring and English Conversation classes are also available. Upon arrival students take a placement exam upon arrival to SCC to test into the appropriate English level. Students in the program work on improving the following skills: Reading, Writing, Grammar, Listening/Speaking, Language Laboratory, Computer Skills, and Accent Reduction. Classes are small providing more personal attention and many of the courses are eligible for college credit.

Applicants can enroll directly in the academic program if they present evidence of their level of English language proficiency. The applicant must attain a score of at least 500 on the paper-based test, or 61 on the Internet-based test (iBT). Regardless of TOEFL or IELTS scores, all new students are required to take placements tests upon arrival at Scottsdale Community College. Placement tests will be given upon arrival at the college in order to determine the student’s level of instruction in the ESL program. Students admitted to the Intensive English Program (English as a Second Language program) will not be permitted to enroll in academic program.

Transfer Center

Many of the students that attend SCC take advantage of the excellent Advisement office and transfer to four-year universities to complete their Bachelor Degree. As part of Maricopa County Community college District, Scottsdale offers an Associate in Transfer Partnership which is designed to meet the needs of the students transferring to public and private colleges and universities. This degree is developed specifically for students who have an identified major and have selected the baccalaureate degree-granting institution to which they intend to transfer. The Associate in Transfer Partnership degree is an articulated academic program of study established among the student, the accredited baccalaureate degree-granting institution selected by the student, and the primary Maricopa Community College the student attends. Students can after completion of the ATP transfer to Arizona State University – Tempe Campus, Arizona State University – West Campus, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona as well as a long list of reputable private as well as public universities located throughout the country. Student Life

With over 11,000 students enrolled in classes every semester, there is always something going on on-campus. Students including international, have countless ways to get involved. Students can choose among 25 clubs with some of the favorites being International Community Club and Outdoor Adventure Club, and Dance Club. Students also have the ability to give back to their community through a variety of projects.

Being located closely to a sports Mecca, it is easy to understand that athletics are a big part of the Scottsdale Community College experience. Students choose to participate in a wide variety of sports or just cheer on the Artichokes (school mascot) on to their wins. Scottsdale being a golf paradise, it is no surprise that many students at SCC are avid golfers. No matter their athletic interest, students can find it at SCC and the Scottsdale community.

Campus /Location

Scottsdale Community College’s campus is located just minutes away from downtown Scottsdale. Scottsdale, with a population of 240,410, is a city adjacent to Phoenix that has become internationally recognized as a premier, upscale tourist destination, while maintaining its own identity and culture as ”The West’s Most Western Town.” Scottsdale was also voted by the council of Mayors at the “most livable city” in the US. Over 300 days of sunshine are enjoyed year-round and easy access to outdoor and recreational activities such as golfing, hiking, rock climbing, water sports - it is no wonder everyone loves living in Scottsdale! In addition, popular attractions such as Southern California, Las Vegas, the Mexican border and the Grand Canyon are all within a day’s drive.

Phoenix, the fifth largest city in US is home to world-class museums, libraries, cultural events, and professional athletics. Throughout the area you will also find excellent restaurants, shopping, theaters, zoos, parks, and exciting nightlife. There’s always something to see or do. Sports fans find exciting entertainment offered by many popular professional teams in the area, such as the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball, Phoenix Suns basketball, Arizona Cardinals football, and Phoenix Coyotes ice hockey. Major League Baseball teams also hold the spring training in Arizona. Scottsdale is also considered a golfer’s paradise with over 200 golf courses in the Greater Phoenix area.
