Washington Academy

East Machias, Maine

Founded in 1792, Washington Academy is a co-educational boarding and day school for grades 9 through 12. Located in down east Maine, an area famous for its natural beauty and pristine harbors, we are only two miles from the Atlantic Ocean and 30 minutes to Canada.

We offer a choice of three suggested enrollment patterns: Academic/ College Preparatory, Career Technology, and Vocational. With AP classes in the major disciplines, honors classes, ESL, fine arts, computer courses, and instruction for students with specific learning disabilities, there is something for everyone. A student to teacher ratio of 13:1 means that faculty members get to know each student by name. Unique to Washington Academy is the Coastal Ecology Program, providing students with real world experiences in research and problem solving and the Marine Vocational Technology Program, which provides courses in boat building and handling, maintenance, repair, and restoration. Over fifty extracurricular activities ranging from 19 interscholastic sports, drama, communications, music, academics, and special interest clubs are offered. Boarding students can choose between staying in our well appointed dormitories or live in a host home experiencing life with an American Family.

Academic and Sport Facilities

Campus is comprised of seven buildings situated on 30 acres. The main building or hub is where most of the students are on a daily basis, this is where they start their day in their advisor classes as well as eat breakfast and lunch attending 70 percent of their classes here. Students may travel throughout the day to one of our other six buildings attending classes such as C.N.A classes in our Albee Richardson Building, or a boat building class in the Boat Shop, or the Gymnasium/music building. Across the street from the main building is the original school founded in 1792, here students can visit the nurse and attend language classes. There are 3 dormitories, the largest of which is brand new housing our boys and the other two are colonial homes that are home to our female students.

We have a gymnasium, where students participate in Basketball, Volleyball, Wrestling and Cheerleading to mention a few sporting events we hold in this facility. Our campus has fields that are used to play softball, baseball, soccer, and football.

Dormitories and School Residences

All three dormitories have wireless connection, cable TV and phone service. They are equipped with a kitchen as well as a recreation room and are staffed 24 hours a day. Most rooms are double occupancy.
