Reflections on Studying in America from a Spanish Student

My name is Marta, and I am from Barcelona, Spain. I spent the 2011-2012 school year as a sophomore at IRCHS, Vero Beach, FL. At IRCHS I felt very welcomed since the beginning, by faculty and students; and had an amazing host family which helped me whenever I needed anything.

At school I was able to take challenging classes, such as my favorite, AP Chemistry, but also Dancing, which I enjoyed very much. I also joined the Model United Nations Club, which gave me the opportunity to travel to different universities across Florida, and even Canada. I participated in a lot of school events, went to all school dances, and joined the Vero Beach High School track and field team. Throughout the year I made a lot of friends, some of them I have met with three years later back at home.

Overall, my year abroad was an opportunity for me to be more independent, learn English, discover a new culture, and make international friends. Of course, at times I felt homesick and missed my friends and family, but it was an incredible experience that I would definitely repeat.
