HSU offers something for every international student. Those interested in pursuing their Bachelor or Master degree can choose from a wide range of programs in Business, Science, Biology, Informatics, Arts and more. Intensive ESL programs give students the chance for conditional admission. Semester and academic year programs give students the chance to study in the USA and transfer credits back to their home country.

Bachelor Degree Program

  • International students who are interested in pursuing their degree in the USA can apply to one of many bachelor programs at HSU.
  • Requirements:
  • Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 on 4.0 scale
  • TOEFL 70 IBT or IELTS score of 6.0
  • Or Completion of the International English Language Institute program at Humboldt State University

Master Degree Program 2-year study

  • International students who are interested in pursuing their degree in the USA can apply to one of many Master’s programs at HSU.
  • Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree with minimum GPA 2.5
  • TOEFL 80 ibt/IELTS 6.5
  • GMAT/GRE depending on program

Study Abroad

For undergraduate and graduate students

Students can study at Humboldt State University (HSU) for one or two semesters without going through the formal admission process.  Courses taken at HSU semester or one year program can be transferred to the student’s home university for credit.

Each semester at HSU offers courses in more than 100 different programs and options. Many of these courses have additional spaces available after HSU students have registered. The HSU Study California program allows international students to take advantage of these extra spaces.

All course instruction and faculty available to full-time HSU degree seeking students are also available to HSU Study California students. HSU Study California students are able to use the Student Health Center, Student Recreation Center, receive a student ID card, use the local bus system and attend all HSU athletic events for free! 


  • Undergraduate students TOEFL 71 IBT/IELTS 6.0

  • Students from Germany: DAAD Language Test certificate with a "B" in every section.
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher

Conditional Admission + ESL

Students who meet the academic requirements for admission to HSU for undergraduate programs or MBA, but who are missing their English language proficiency requirement, may be eligible for conditional admission.  These students are granted admission to HSU’s International English Language Institute (IELI) and issued a conditional admission letter to HSU for their desired program.

On Campus Housing

Students stay in double and triple rooms in various dorms on campus (single rooms are available at extra cost). All rooms are furnished with a bed, desk and wardrobe closet for each resident. The rooms are wired for optional telephone service and cable TV service. Every resident has the ability to connect to the campus computer through ResNet. Residents in each suite are responsible for cleaning the common area kitchen, living room and hallway. Custodial services are provided for the bathrooms.

On campus accommodation comes with Green meal package. Students receive cards with points to get breakfast, lunch and dinner.
