Mother’s Day: A Celebration of Moms and Mother figures

The idea of a day designated to celebrate mothers became popular in the United States in the 1900s. However, in some countries it has been celebrated as far back as the 1500s. It seems a day to honor and appreciate the sacrifice and contributions of mothers–and all of the women who mother us–has long been seen as warranted.

In America, Mother’s Day is a fixture in our calendars on the second Sunday in May. The exact date varies in celebrations around the world but the sentiment does not. Mother’s Day is a day to recognize and appreciate the moms and mother figures in our lives.

Celebrating Mother’s Day can be challenging for many individuals due to various reasons. However, it is comforting to reflect on the fact that a mother’s love is universal and can come in many forms.

If we’re lucky, the love of many different moms and mother figures contributes to shaping and influencing us throughout our lives. Although, for our International Students, this special, motherly bond is often found with their Host Mothers.

Mother’s Day is an opportunity for all of us to express gratitude and appreciation for the important role that mothers play in our lives–wherever and whomever they may be.

Happy Mother’s Day!
