Overlooking the city of Brighton and its beautiful seaside, Varndean College is a vibrant and bustling Sixth Form college. The college offers a variety of academic and vocational courses including the increasingly popular International Baccalaureate Diploma and has an excellent reputation for examination results. The 2019 pass rate was 98% for A Levels and an incredible 100% for vocational courses. Students progress to university and employment - with many former students now prominent in public life. A dedicated International Team work to ensure that all exchange students settle in with ease and can reach their full potential.
Facilities
Varndean students have the youthful, vibrant and popular city of Brighton on their doorstep, as well as being just a short train ride from London- a truly desirable location for studying abroad in the UK. The college is located on a very attractive campus comprised of modern buildings surrounded by playing fields, all with stunning views of the sea. Spring 2020 saw the opening of Varndean College's much-awaited new £2.9 million STEM Centre. The newly-constructed 2-storey building houses 4 science labs, 6 teaching rooms and prep rooms as well as a fabulous main foyer and atrium. Through its teaching of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) courses, Varndean trains and encourages students to move on to higher level STEM courses. Specialist support is also given to students applying to Oxford and Cambridge Universities as well as Medical, Veterinary and Dental courses.
Sports & Arts
The college offers an outstanding range of enrichment opportunities with something on offer for everyone, no matter how niche their interests. Wednesday afternoons give students the chance to play badminton, basketball, football, rugby, table tennis, netball or tennis, take yoga or Zumba classes or spend some time in the gym. The college also offers an unrivalled selection of clubs and societies for students to get involved in, including everything from Funk Band to Politics Society and Environmental Committee to Origami Club.
Student Life
Varndean students come not only from Brighton & Hove and schools across Sussex, but also from the independent sector and overseas; creating a uniquely cosmopolitan environment. The feeling within the traditional school buildings is one of openness and acceptance and the college prides itself on creating a supportive community within its walls. Support for students is excellent, whether from personal tutors or using important services such as welfare, careers guidance and additional support for learning, including language support. Students at Varndean can shape the curriculum and their chosen activities to match their interests, which invariably leads them to make lots of like-minded friends.
