HIGHLIGHT INFO

Situated near the city of Portsmouth on the beautiful south coast of England, South Downs College is the place for technical excellent. South Downs College focuses exclusively on offering career-focused subjects. This clear focus enables them to target the opportunities they provide students, the specialist, industry standard teaching, and the use of their excellent facilities to ensure that students leave with the skills, knowledge and experience to excel in their chosen field.

In just this last year, South Downs students reached the semi-finals of the WorldSkils UK competition and finished in the top 5 in the country. Success of this level is not uncommon for South Downs with over 75% of students achieving the very highest grades in their final exams.

Facilities
Students can benefit from the wide range of modern facilities across the South Downs campus. Dance studios, science labs, recording studios, a fully equipped gym and 4G Astro-pitch, art studios, study centres, libraries, a sensory room – the list is endless. Between lessons, there are plenty of social spaces for students to grab lunch or a coffee with friends, relax in the student lounge, or even enjoy the outdoor seating area in the warmer months. Beyond the fantastic campus sites, the local area offers lots to see and do and has excellent transport connections into the modern island city of Portsmouth.

Sports & Arts
There’s a lot more to South Downs College than just gaining qualifications. The Be Extraordinary programme is designed to give students lots of new opportunities and experiences. For students who enjoy keeping active, the college offers a range of sports teams for them to join. Whether they want to keep fit, get to know new people, or are aiming at competing at the highest level, there are lots of sporting activities to get involved in. Students have a wealth of opportunities to take part in trips and societies and spend time developing their interests and skills beyond the classroom.

Student Life
South Downs College encourages students to become independent adults by taking ownership of their studies and managing their spare time effectively, and this is encouraged by the college’s progressive approach to timetabling. Classes do not start until 10am because academic research shows that teenagers learn better later in the day. Students have 5 hours of teaching time per subject, per week, which is more than any other college in the local area. Staff always devise timetables with student feedback and needs in mind, so study time is scheduled into the day. This gives students who are well-organised the chance to keep evenings free for extra-curricular activities and socialising.
